Fans are calling for the 22-year-old to be called up to the national squad for the first time before the November games.

With ten goals in fifteen games, 22-year-old Armando “Hormiga” González has ascended to the top of the Liga MX goalscoring standings.
The teenage attacker, who was born in Celaya, Guanajuato, advanced through the Chivas academy before making his second division debut in 2020 with Tapatío.
After making an appearance in a 1-1 draw with Santos Laguna in January 2024, Hormiga was promoted to the first squad under Fernando Gago. However, it would take him eighteen months to establish himself at the top level of Mexican football.
With just four points from seven games at the beginning of the 2025–2026 season, Chivas and new manager Gabriel Milito were under intense pressure. But things started to improve for Los Rojiblancos on Independence Day when they defeated Club América in the Clásico de los Clásicos, with Hormiga scoring the crucial goal to win.

Chivas had only lost twice in the eight games leading up to their trip to the capital in mid-September, making them one of the league’s most successful teams. As Matchday 15 draws to a close, the Guadalajara team is currently in sixth place and has jumped into the automatic playoff spots thanks to their scorching run.
Hormiga’s scoring streak didn’t begin until after that pivotal Clásico match. Prior to this past weekend, when the Hormiga was called upon in the Clásico Tapatlán against Atlas, goals against Necaxa, Pumas, and Mazatlán attracted national attention.
Chivas’ form made them the overwhelming favorites, but few could have imagined the control they would have, even though their city rivals have faltered during the season.
Hormiga’s two headers gave Chivas a commanding lead at the break, and Luis Romo’s goal gave Chivas a three-point advantage. The 22-year-old continued to terrorize the Atlas defense in the second half, scoring a record hattrick by finding ideal positions in the box, making timely runs, and physically pushing the back line.
Despite playing for a side that took half the season to even begin contending for a spot in the top half of the standings, his derby-day goals tie him with Portuguese international Paulinho, Toluca’s dependable talisman.
In an effort to challenge Raúl Jiménez and Santiago Giménez of AC Milan, many are now urging the Chivas striker to be called up to Javier Aguirre’s November squad. With only one squad appearance in their October matches against Colombia and Ecuador, recent performances have indicated that Mexico needs a greater range of attacking alternatives.
Chivas’ run has been unforgettable, but if they hope to finish the season on a high note, Armando “Hormiga” González will need to maintain his status as one of the Liga MX’s most productive players. Pachuca and Monterrey are up next before they learn whether they will make the Apertura playoffs.
